Area Rugs

Regular care and maintenance will keep your area rugs looking great and your home looking as beautiful and stylish as ever.

A few handy tips:

Vacuum or sweep your rugs as you would wall-to-wall carpeting being careful not to allow the fringes to get pulled or sucked in by the vacuum.

  • Rotate your rug 180 degrees every few months, or every year depending on usage. Your rug should be exposed to light equally so that the colours fade evenly and to have an equal amount of traffic on it so that the pile wears evenly.

Spot Cleaning

Water spill - should be dried immediately on both sides of your rug if possible, with a hairdryer set on a warm temperature

  • Soft drink or Alcohol spill - apply salt or baking soda to the spot for a few minutes to absorb the colour of the drink. Then vacuum off the salt or baking soda. After vacuuming, gently wipe the stain in the direction of the pile faces, using a wet towel. Regular or carbonated water can be used to wet the towel. Do not scrub the rug.
  • Old stains - Do not attempt to clean old stains yourself. Take the rug to a professional handmade rug retailer.

  • Your rug should be washed by a professional every 2 to 5 years depending on the amount of traffic on the rug. It is recommended to have it washed professionallly because dust, dirt and broken fibre gets into the foundation over time. Professionals dust the rug with special equipment to get all these elements out of the foundation before washing and ensure that the rug is dried from the surface to the foundation before it is used again.
  • General carpet-cleaning companies use techniques and chemicals suitable for wall-to-wall carpets and may not be appropriate for handmade rugs.

  • Padding will stabilize and protect your rug making it safer to walk on and preserving its value and appearance. Ask your retailer about the proper padding to be used under your rug.

  • For long term storage, vacuum your rug first and store it in a dry location without exposure to light or air. It is recommended to put mothballs in the middle of the rug to protect it against insect damage. Then roll the rug reasonably tight against its nap (against the direction of the pile face) into a cylindrical shape.

Rug repair

  • Repairing a handmade rug can be time consuming and labour intensive resulting in a sometimes costly expense. Before repairing your rug, consider the cost of the repair in comparison to the rug's value. Sometimes, it is better for collectible items to remain in their original state since their value might actually decrease with any change, even if the change results in a better appearance. A professional opinion is always a good idea.
